Nepal - The Himalayan Kingdom : Unity in Diversity:

Nepal is one of the founder members of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and is a picturesque country, with some of the world’s highest snow capped peaks. Spanning a length and breadth of nearly 500 miles by 120 miles, Nepal covers an area of 55,463 square miles. with a topographically varied terrain. About 80 percent of its land is covered by hills and mountains and the rest by plains, lowlands and river valleys. It has a population of nearly 23 million increasing annually by about 2.7 percent.

Draped along the greatest heights of the Himalaya, Nepal is a land of sublime scenery, time-worn temples, and some of the best walking trails on earth. It's a country rich in scenic splendor and cultural treasures. Nepal is a predominantly agricultural country with more than 90% of the people engaged in agriculture.  Nepal is specific to various ethnic groups and Nepali is the national language written in Devnagari script, serving the purpose of lingua franca in Nepal. The educated people speak and understand English and Hindi as well. Nepal’s climate varies with its topography. It ranges from tropical to temperate climate depending upon the altitude. The Terai region, which lies in the Southern part of the country for instance, has a hot and humid climate, the hilly mid-land regions are pleasant almost all the year round, although winter nights are cold. The Northern mountain region around an altitude above 3,353 meters has an Alpine climate with a considerably lower temperature in winter as can be expected.

Chitwan is one of the seventy-five districts of Nepal.

The name Chitwan is derived from the name of king Chitrawan who ruled this part of the country before the country was united by king Prithivinarayan Shah, the fore father of the present ruling dynasty.  It is a district occupying an area of 2292 sq km that lies at an altitude of 356 m above the sea level.  It lies in the Narayani zone, Bharatpur being the head quarter. It is estimated that there is about 4 lakh population in the district consisting of various castes like Brahmin-Kshatriya, tharus and tamang and so on.  The jungle area is included under “Royal Chitwan National Park” which occupies partially Chitwan, Parsa and Makawanpur districts.  It was included in the “world heritage” since 1986.   The rare one horned Rhino, Wild Boar, Fresh Water Dolphin, Crocodile and more than 350 species of birds and the Royal Bengal Tiger are all found in the sanctuary.

The Chitwan district has become an outstanding district in Nepal by having achieved a great height in  recent years ,particularly  in the health sector . It has become a strong hold of medical education facilities because of its easy accessibility from all parts of the country. The College of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Mahendra Memorial Hospital,King Mahendra Memorial Eye Hospital, B.P.Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital and a good number of paramedical teaching institutes all are here now.

The medical college is utilizing the Mahendra Memorial Hospital as well as the B.P.Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital and the Kind Mahendra Memorial Eye Hospital as training hospitals for undergraduate students and Interns for furthering their knowledge and experience in the clinical field.
