Nepal - The Himalayan Kingdom : Unity in Diversity:
Nepal is one of the founder
members of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and is a
picturesque country, with some of the world’s highest snow capped peaks.
Spanning a length and breadth of nearly 500 miles by 120 miles, Nepal covers an
area of 55,463 square miles. with a topographically varied terrain. About 80
percent of its land is covered by hills and mountains and the rest by plains,
lowlands and river valleys. It has a population of nearly 23 million increasing
annually by about 2.7 percent.
Draped along the greatest heights of the Himalaya, Nepal
is a land of sublime scenery, time-worn temples, and some of the best walking
trails on earth. It's a country rich in scenic splendor and cultural treasures.
Nepal is a predominantly agricultural country with more than 90% of the people
engaged in agriculture. Nepal is specific to various ethnic groups and
Nepali is the national language written in Devnagari script, serving the purpose
of lingua franca in Nepal. The educated people speak and understand English and
Hindi as well. Nepal’s climate varies with its topography. It ranges from
tropical to temperate climate depending upon the altitude. The Terai region,
which lies in the Southern part of the country for instance, has a hot and humid
climate, the hilly mid-land regions are pleasant almost all the year round,
although winter nights are cold. The Northern mountain region around an altitude
above 3,353 meters has an Alpine climate with a considerably lower temperature
in winter as can be expected.
Chitwan is one of the seventy-five districts of
Nepal.
The name Chitwan is derived
from the name of king Chitrawan who ruled this part of the country before the
country was united by king Prithivinarayan Shah, the fore father of the present
ruling dynasty. It is a district occupying an area of 2292 sq km that lies at
an altitude of 356 m above the sea level. It lies in the Narayani zone,
Bharatpur being the head quarter. It is estimated that there is about 4 lakh
population in the district consisting of various castes like Brahmin-Kshatriya,
tharus and tamang and so on. The jungle area is included under “Royal Chitwan
National Park” which occupies partially Chitwan, Parsa and Makawanpur
districts. It was included in the “world heritage” since 1986. The rare one
horned Rhino, Wild Boar, Fresh Water Dolphin, Crocodile and more than 350
species of birds and the Royal Bengal Tiger are all found in the sanctuary.
The Chitwan district has become an outstanding district
in Nepal by having achieved a great height in recent years ,particularly in
the health sector . It has become a strong hold of medical education facilities
because of its easy accessibility from all parts of the country. The College of
Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Mahendra Memorial Hospital,King Mahendra
Memorial Eye Hospital, B.P.Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital and a good number of
paramedical teaching institutes all are here now.
The medical college is
utilizing the Mahendra Memorial Hospital as well as the B.P.Koirala Memorial
Cancer Hospital and the Kind Mahendra Memorial Eye Hospital as training
hospitals for undergraduate students and Interns for furthering their knowledge
and experience in the clinical field.
Bharatpur, Narayanghat and
Devghat

The Narayangarh is the main
city in Chitwan District. It has been a center of trade and commerce,
transportation and curios since long time. It is situated on the banks of the
river Narayani which is the confluence of 7 rivers and it ultimately forming a
tributary to the Holy Ganges. The Narayani River is considered to be the holiest
river in the country.
The Bharatpur, a part of
Narayangarh and is the headquarter of the Chitwan District, where the College of
Medical Sciences is situated. The Bageshwori complex of the Medical College is
situated at Devghat area is on the national highway. Bharatpur may be called as
the gateway of Nepal, affording easy access to the East, West, North, and South
by both road and air. It is 146 Kms from Kathmandu, 240 Kms from the Indian town
of Gorakhpur and 126 Kms from the Raxaul.
The weather of Bharatpur is
however, deceptive. The winter spreads between November and February. The months
of December and January being the coldest with temperatures touching 2-3 degrees
Celsius, while the hot summer spreads from March to May with temperatures rising
between 44-45 degrees celsius. The Monsoons usually strike between June and
September with heavy downpour. However, once the rain clears off, one can enjoy
the science beauty of the snow capped mountains. The Bharatpur has an airport
bringing daily flights from and to Kathmandu in 20 minutes and is well connected
with other towns of Nepal by express bus services.

Travel Information
You can come to Bharatpur, by air or by road.
By Air.
- International flights to Kathmandu, and
domestic flights from Katmandu to Bharatpur. (Flying time-- 20 minutes).
- Passport or Election card are necessary for
entry to Nepal if traveling by air.
- The airport has taxi services which may take
approximately 5 minutes to the college.
By Road / Railways
- Raxual, from Bihar is the Nearest Railway
station. From Raxual, Nepal border can be approached by taxi or rickshaw,
which is 5 minutes, into Birgunj. From Birgunj, taxi or bus to Bharatpur
directly (travel time, approximately 3 hrs)
- No documents are necessary by this route.
- Other places of approach are Kakarvita, Nepal
with proximity to New Jalpaiguri, Sliliguri, West Bengal. & Bhairava, Nepal
with proximity to Sanauli, India which is 2 hrs from Gorakhpur, Uttarpradesh.
Note: Indian denomination notes of Rs 500/- or
Rs1000/- are banned in Nepal.
